"Riding the Snakes" in Namibia's sand dunes

Namibia is a country of sweeping deserts, vibrant dunes, fascinating wildlife, rich traditions, and a rugged coastline. The Namib Desert’s famous red dunes paint a surreal scene, and the vast open spaces stir a powerful sense of freedom and adventure. Namibia’s wildlife, from elephants and lions to the resilient oryx, thrives against the odds in this arid environment. The country’s local tribes, such as the Himba and San, share unique cultural traditions that I found interesting to experience.  

The Namib Desert also reveals some dramatic, snake-like formations, especially around Sossusvlei in Namib-Naukluft National Park. Known for some of the tallest dunes in the world, this area showcases sand shaped by the desert winds into serpentine curves that twist like a snake’s body. These shapes stand out, especially at sunrise or sunset, when shadows accentuate their curves.

In Swakopmund, I explored the towering dunes in a safe but exciting way. I sticked to smaller slopes rather than the more extreme descents. Dune boarding here can hit speeds of 60-70 km/h (37-43 mph) on steeper slopes, and some slopes are challenging due to shifting sand that makes control difficult. To stay safe, I started slowly, focusing on braking and control techniques, and avoided very steep or bumpy areas. Falls can be rough, but getting sandy is all part of the fun!

Lie-down sandboarding was a unique experience, allowing me to pick up speed as I zoomed down the golden slopes. This adrenaline-filled adventure not only offered a heart-pounding thrill but also a chance to feel closely connected with Namibia’s remarkable desert scenery in a way I’ll never forget.
