After the 2026 World Cup: Football must continue to stand against racism

After the final whistle, the fight against racism must continue. Reminded by the message from United Nations (UN): "Be a champion for human rights. Join us the in standing against racism." Through the glimpses I have seen during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and through my travels around the world, one message has become very clear to me: Football should bring people together, regardless of their skin colour, nationality, religion or background. There must be no place for racism, discrimination or hatred, in football or anywhere else in society. This is also deeply personal for us in Norway. 22nd July will forever be remembered as the day our country was struck by brutal acts of terrorism. We must never forget, and we must never remain silent when hatred threatens our shared humanity.

This article is an editor’s statement from us in the global travel guide Travel Explorations. It reflects our values and our clear stand against racism, discrimination, xenophobia and all forms of intolerance, in football and throughout society.

We must raise awareness and support global action against racism, discrimination, xenophobia and all forms of intolerance. As the UN campaign says on its website: Learn, Speak Up, Act!”.

Remembering 22nd July

On 22 July, we in Norway remember the 77 people who were killed in the terrorist attacks in Oslo and on the small island Utøya in 2011. They were attacked by a right-wing extremist driven by hatred, racism and intolerance.

This day reminds us that hate must never be ignored or allowed to become normal. At our global travel guide Travel Explorations, we stand for openness, democracy and respect for all people. Our experiences travelling around the world have shown us that we have far more in common than what divides us.

We will never forget 22 July in Norway. Love and humanity must always be stronger than hate. This belief comes from my own experiences travelling around the world, not from the constant stream of negative stories in the media. Wherever I have travelled, I have met ordinary people who welcomed me with kindness, warmth and hospitality. These personal encounters have taught me that we share far more than what divides us.

25th anniversary of the DDPA

The Durban Declaration and Programme of Action is a global plan for racial justice and equality (published 31st August 2024 on UN website). It calls on every country to take real action against racism, discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance. Yet racism still harms communities, politics, media, sport and the online world. No country is free from it, and words must now become action.

Travel Explorations`mission

At Travel Explorations, we believe travelling should bring people closer together, and not drive them apart. Yet across the world, xenophobia, racism, antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred and the persecution of Christians and other minorities are rising.

Hate speech is no longer confined to society’s fringes. It is spreading through social media, political rhetoric and extremist movements, turning migrants, refugees, women and minority communities into targets.

Travel teaches us that our differences are not something to fear, but something to understand and respect. Wherever we go, we share a responsibility to meet people with openness, curiosity.

At Travel Explorations, we want the best for all people around the world. We believe travel should build bridges, create understanding and bring people closer together. Everyone deserves to be met with respect, kindness and dignity, regardless of nationality, religion, culture, gender or background.

The world belongs to all of us, and its diversity is something to celebrate. Through travel, we hope to encourage openness, curiosity and a deeper respect for our shared humanity and dignity. Our common humanity must always be stronger than the forces seeking to divide us.

The World Cup in football is over, but the fight against racism must continue!

Stein Morten Lund, 22nd July 2026
