Zagreb, Croatia - Full of open air galleries and architectural wonders

2017-12-26
Zagreb, Croatia

Instead of experiencing Croatia`s dazzling coastline, I admired the beauty of the country`s inland capital Zagreb. The city is full of open air galleries and architectural wonders, which make the city very much alive.

Some of them are the Croatian National Theater, Mt. Medvednica, The Church of St. Mark, and the Zagreb Cathedral. Also the streets themselves are all architectural wonders.

Zagreb is medieval but a modern European town. The best of Zagreb is the nice people. They are always in the mood for providing you the best service. I felt the pulse of the city of Zagreb, in the middle of October 2017, and experienced all the charm Zagreb has to offer. Got acquainted with the past and the present of the city. Zagreb is a pulsating city of around 800,000 people (metropolitan area: 1,200,000). The city boasts a charming medieval "old city" with architecture and cobbled streets.

The city’s landscape and the locals seemed to provide strong artistic inspiration and vibrant creativity. One of the most fascinating things about the city is all the open air galleries. From long distances I could observe architectural wonders, but to really get under the skin of the city I started to study the amazing street arts.

See photos of street murals on Travel Explorations` Facbook page.

Many places around in the city I could admire murals on walls and buildings. I also explored big art treasures inside inner courtyards. Seeing the city through the eyes of its street artists was quite fascinating. I really believe there is a the symbolic meaning behind these works of art, but they were hard for me to interpret. All the murals give Zagreb a strong expression and makes the city very much alive.

Croatia’s capital comes alive at night, when its streets and squares turn into a huge open-air party. Much of the action centres on pedestrianised Tkalčićeva street, which resembles a beach-resort strip, with outdoor tables and a buzzy atmosphere. Here we had plenty of fun!

The city is divided into three parts: the thousand-year old Gornji grad (Upper Town) which contains the Presidential Palace, the iconic St Mark’s Church, the Croatian parliament (Sabor), and museums and galleries which are all set in cobbled streets lit by gas lamps; the 19th century Donji grad (Lower Town) with its shops, restaurants, cafes, theatres and parks; and the modern post-World War II area of Novi Zagreb (‘new Zagreb’) which is full of high-rise buildings.

The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia, but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus.

I also attend a spooky witch hunting tour in Zagreb, Croatia - organised by the tour guide Secret Zagreb. This activity took place in Zagreb’s dark part of the medieval Upper Town on Friday 13th October 2017. With the American psychological horror film Blair Witch Project in my mind, I expected strange things to happen ....On the tour I searched for long forgotten souls. Here I ventured a step into the spirituell world where ghosts live. Walked around at graveyards and other haunted places: heard amazing stories about spirits, curses, witches, secret societies and even dragons.

7 Cities to See Powerful Street Art - Graffiti, murals, vandalism—street art takes on various names, but one thing that rings true across the world is the cultural relevance behind these works of art (11th April 2017).
