Wild trekking in Norway with DNT - the Norwegian Trekking Association!

2006-08-10
Trekking from hut to hut in Norway`s pure wilderness is the best way to experience the country. When the snow has melted there are great opportunities for exploring Norway`s breathtaking nature by foot. Here you can walk down to deep valleys, climb high mountains and cross glaciers. DNT - the Norwegian Trekking Association, also called Turistforeningen in Norwegian, are Norway's biggest outdoor organisation for activities. During 135 years the organisation has promoted trekking and improved conditions for all who enjoy the country's broad range of outdoor attractions. For late summer and autumn this year (2006), DNT has some special tour offers which should be interesting for eager trekkers and adventurers.

Each year, more than 4000 tours, courses and other activities draw more than 100,000 participants. DNT has more than 207,000 members, most in Norway, but one in ten abroad.

Some of the most dramatic mountains in Norway are found in Jotunheimen National Park and Rondane National Park. An unforgettable adventure is to hike roped up across one of the many glaciers in the area. In Jotunheim (the Home of the Giants) it`s possible to climb the two highest summits in Norway and also Besseggen, which should be well known for readers of Henrik Ibsen’s famous play “Peer Gynt”. The highlights on tours in Jotunheimen er sharp ridges, high plateaux, glaciers, lakes and valleys with rivers and waterfalls. It gives the trekkers challenges as they enjoy to handle with their best spirit.

All of Norway’s summits over 2300 metres are to be found here, with Galdhøpiggen, 2469m, Glittertind, 2452m and Store Skagastølstind, 2405m. These are the three highest summits in Norway.

DNT`s special tour offers for the late summer and autumn for 2006 are:

Late sommer:
Late summer tour in the Hardangervidda: departure 31/8 and 7/9.
Long weekend Skarvheimen: departure 17/8 og 31/8

Autumn:
Jotunheimen: departure 8/9 and 15/9 (without tourguide)
Weekend tour Aurlandsdalen: departure 18/8, 25/8, 1/9 og 15/9 (without tourguide)
Rondane: departure 24/9 and1/10.

On other treeking tours in Norway there is also possible to encounter reindeers and other wild animals. Some of the most exciting experience is to observe the Moskus Ox, an ancient big beast found only in Norway, Greenland and some few in Canada.

On organised tours arrangend by DNT there are high qualified tour guides, safety precautions and great opportunities for making friendship with others in the tour group.

All DNT routes are clearly waymarked at intervals sufficiently short so you can see from one waymark to the next, even in fog and rain. In all, there are some 20,000 km of T-marked routes.

According to DNT`s website (www.turistforeningen.no/english), the orgranisation`s work is conducted by 52 local member associations, each expert in the area it serves. Together they have built and now maintain one of Europe's larger marked hiking trail networks and arguably the world's most extensive cross-country skiing track networks.

You can hike or ski in comfort, as there are more than 430 cabins in the networks across the country. On the trails there are challenges for everyone. Since Norway is one of the least densely populated countries of the world, it offers extensive areas available for outdoor activities, and many of them are readily available, close to cities. Norway offers some of the world`s last wilderness. For genuine adventurers trekking in this country will be an experience of lifetime. Are you ready to take the challenge into the wildest wilderness?
