Some people have called the tourists the vandals of the future. They stamp down everything they walk through like swarm of wild animals. So why promote developing of tourism?
As The World Tourism Organization writes on its website: "Modern tourism is closely linked to development and encompasses a growing number of new destinations. These dynamics have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-ýeconomic progress."
Tourism has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries. This global spread of tourism in industrialised and developed states has produced economic and employment benefits in many related sectors - from construction to agriculture or telecommunications.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO/OMT) is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the leading international organization in the field of tourism. UNWTO plays a central and decisive role in promoting the development of responsible,sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing countries.
UNWTO predicts a 4% growth of international tourist arrivals in 2007, in line with its long-term forecast growth rate through to 2020 of 4.1%.

World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27 September. This year Ghana in Africa will be the host. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals and to highlight the contributions the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
