The Norwegian K2005 Expedition - the summit attempt on K2 has started

2005-08-04
Finally the Norwegian team has started its way up to the top on K2 from basecamp 2 - from the Pakistan side (4 August - night to Thursday). The six members of the team are: Rolf Bae - Leader, Ms. Cecilie Skog, Trym Saeland, Oystein Stangeland, Sigurd Felde, and Per Henry Knutsen, who is the manager for the Base Camp.

It has been several weeks of impation waiting. However, the weather forecast is not to good and they might have to stop and return. Only time will show. Other expeditions have started out the night before, but the Norwegian team did not want to break the roule: not to access the mountain befor 24 hours after last snow-fall. Will they make it?

All preparations for a summit attempt have been done properly. All expedition members have been sleeping one or several nights in 7000 metres, thus are everybody fully acclimatisized. Equipment has been deployed in all camps.

They climb by the normal route from Pakistan and had planned to reach the top in the middle of July, but due to unstable weather had to wait for the top attemp.

The expedition members have been in the base camp, waiting for a for a 5 - 6 days period of good weather. They need 4 days to reach the summit and one day to go down again.

The final push will start from camp 4 or 5 and after summiting they will go down as far as possible, probably to camp 2 or 3.

See their website www.K2005.no for more information.
