Advice & Trends
Here we give advice and inform about important trends in the world`s biggest industry - travel tourisme! Life could be so wonderful if we only knew what to do with it. Travelling is one alternative. Explore more!

The greatest wonders of the world are selected by Wanderlust Magazine readers!

2005-11-07
Readers of Wanderlust, Britain's leading magazine for real travellers, have updated the millennia-old list for the 21st century. Overall, 3,569 travellers' votes were counted in the largest survey of its kind ever. The results reveal what today's travellers view to be the most extraordinary sights on the planet. The clear voters' favourite is the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu, Peru, which received 52% more votes than its nearest rival, the vast temple complex of Angkor, Cambodia. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the only one of the 7 Wonders of the World still standing, has been relegated to eighth place in the definitive updated list.

Based on information from Wanderlust`s press release, London, 20 October, 2005, the pyramids are ancient news. Make way for the new 7 Wonders. As mentioned the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, has been relegated to eighth place in the definitive updated list.

The clear voters' favourite is the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu, Peru, which received 52% more votes than its nearest rival, the vast temple complex of Angkor, Cambodia. The Wanderlust Seven Wonders of the World, as voted by global travellers, are:

1 Machu Picchu, Peru
2 Angkor, Cambodia
3 Taj Mahal, India
4 Petra, Jordan
5 Grand Canyon, USA
6 Great Wall of China, China
7 Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

"It is no surprise that Wanderlust readers, Britain's best travellers, chose such extraordinary places for the definitive new list of the 7 Wonders," says Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust's co-founder and editor-in-chief. "To explore any of these seven fully requires a great sense of adventure, but they truly represent the most amazing travel experiences on the planet." British wonders making it on to the list are the London Eye (65th), Stonehenge (50th) and the Highlands (41st).

Additional information

Notes based on information from Wanderlust`s press release:

1. Wanderlust's 7 Wonders collectors' issue is available from 20 October. It features each of the updated 7 Wonders, as well as articles on the Original 7, and the full Top 75 as voted for by Wanderlust readers. Michael Palin called Wanderlust "the most discerning travel magazine this side of Nanga Parbat".

2. For the complete list of the top 75 Wonders, as voted for by Wanderlust travellers, see page 103 of the November 05 issue of Wanderlust, available from 21 October.

3. The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World are:
•The Great Pyramid at Giza
• The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
• The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
• The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
• The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
• The Colossus of Rhodes
• The Lighthouse at Alexandria

As commented by Wanderlust Magazine:
Although today we think of the 7 Ancient Wonders as a single definitive list, it wasn't until the sixth century BC that general consensus settled on the seven we know today. While most Greek writers agreed on the first six, the seventh spot was hotly contested. Favourites were the walls of the city of Babylon and the Palace of Cyrus before opinion settled on the lighthouse at Alexandria.

Even in ancient times, it was impossible to visit all 7 Ancient Wonders: the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was burnt to the ground in 356 BC, 66 years before work on the lighthouse at Alexandria was started.
