Searching for the Yeti in Himalaya - Nepal

2003-12-21
Japan's most celebrated Yeti-hunter, Yoshiteru Takahashi, left his country to make "the definitive attempt" to photograph the beast. Mr Takahashi claims to have found a yeti cave on the slopes of Dhaulagiri, the world's fifth highest mountain, in western Nepal.

The Yeti is a mythical creature believed to live in the Himalayas. It's popularly known as "the abominable snowman". Numerous sightings of the Yeti have been reported. As parallel to Yeti, there are legends about the Bigfoot in Pacific Northwest of America.

It's a big, hairy, ape-like monster. Bigfoot, or as it's often called in Canada, the Sasquatch, is mentioned in several native American legends. In fact, the term "Sasquatch" is Indian for "hairy giant."

Yoshiteru Takahashi`s, camera froze in 1994 when he tried to photograph the denizens of the cave, he said in Tokyo before he left.

This year, he used nine infrared cameras with motion sensitive shutters, and wrapped them up well against the Himalayan chill. "We'll get a picture this time," he said, "and then all disbelievers will learn their lessons."
