2004-02-22
The exploration continues in Norway's west part

Archaeologists believe now that they know have found an important Viking grave from the 900-century under a gravel road in Nordfjord in Norway.

The Viking fever is spreading across the world's oceans at the moment. Recently it has been an enormous international interest for the Viking age. For instance the French magazine "Le Monde" nominated the Viking Olav Tryggvason among the twelve greatest heroes in year 1000. Also well know magazines as National Geographic, Der Spiegel and Time have published extensive articles about Norway's famous forefathers.

Arkeologisk Institutt (Archaeological Institute) in Bergen is in charge of the mentioned project. They hope to start digging on the other grave mount already this year. It all started after a causal found in August of weapons as axe, sword, spear and shield. These weapons belonged to a "Viking officer" from the 900-century. The archaeologists also found other interesting items in the grave.

The grave they opened previous month was a "secondary" grave. They expect to find more interesting things in an another burial place beside, which lays under a gravel road in the middle of the area. Already in the 1960`s archaeologists excavated similar graves by the farm Indre Henne. Now archaeologists stands ready to explore more on the farm called Ytre Henne.

An exciting excavation waits for us, says the Norwegian Archaeologist Soren Diinhoff to the Norwegian Newspaper Aftenposten. Is there any big treasure there from the Viking age? Will they find more interesting remains from the Vikings in this area?

Stein Morten Lund, 9 September 2000
