Norwegian K2 Expedition 2005 ascending the king of mountains - K2 - Chogori - between Pakistan and China

2005-06-02
The Norwegian Vikings are on their way! This will be the first Norwegian ascent on K2, the second highest mountain in the world. They will climb by the normal route from Pakistan and plan to reach the top in the middle of July. The six members of the team are: Rolf Bae - Leader - Cho Oyu in 2003, Ms. Cecilie Skog - Cho Oyu in 2003, Everest in 2004, Trym Saeland, Oystein Stangeland, Sigurd Felde, and Per Henry Knutsen, who is the manager for the Base Camp. This mountain is both high and wild, and they who climb there take an extraordinary big risk.....

K2 is not the highest mountain in the world, but considered as the most difficult to climb. The local name of K2 is Chogori, which in Balti language means the king of mountains. The K2 peak is situated on the Pakistan and China border in the mighty Karakoram range.

Since this name is little known outside of Pakistan, K2 is used. The Norwegian K2005 Expedition`s plan is to ascend K2 from the Pakistan side.

K2 has variously been described as the "awesome", "killer" and "savage" mountain. This is because of it's massiveness in size and the numerous unsuccessful attempts made on it by various expeditions, including many American expeditions, who have made quite a few unsuccessful attempts. K2 is a rocky mountain up to 6000 meters, beyond which it becomes an ocean of snow. The summit area is also described by climbers as a "death zone". It`s especially risky because of the unpredictable weather.

The traditional route to its base camp goes from Skardu, which is linked with Islamabad by a good road. From Skardu the route goes via Shigar-Dassu-Askole up to Concordia over the Baltoro glacier. The exact height of the peak is 8,611 meters/28,251 ft, also the second highest in the world. Only Mount Everest is higher.

We in Travel Explorations wish the brave Norwegian Vikings good luck, and look forward to follow their great attemp!
