New world record by the Norwegian Viking Rune Gjeldnes!

2006-01-12
Rune is real geuine record breaker. He has during the past ten days kited more than 1400 kilometres. He has broken his own personal distance record three times. He has also broken the world solo and unsupported distance record, and taken the world record for longest unsupported ski-trek in history. Rune is way ahead of schedule and is getting close to his goal to become the first and only to ski across the North Pole and South Pole unsupported. Finally he decided that he deserved a good day rest and stayed in the tent to recharge his human batteries - before he walk on again!

This is the latest report from Rune (source: his website: Extreme Planet - Seal). Here you can hear his voice reports too.

On 9 January 2006, after 68 days and 104 kilometres, Rune kited past the position 77.27S, 135.50E and took back the world record. Rune is now the world record holder for the longest unsupported ski-trek in history! In total Rune kited 104 kilometres this day, and made an early stop to celebrate, after only four hours of kiting.

Rune has still a long distance to march, but it looks very promising at the moment to reach his final goal!

Additional information
Ousland skied 2845 kilometres across Antarctica alone and unsupported in 1996 - 97. At the time, the longest ski expedition in distance was covered.

The current record is held by Eirik Sønneland and Rolf Bae, who skied 3800 kilometres across Antarctica in 2000 - 2001. One of Runes goals is to break this record during his expedition! Now his is as mentioned above just few days ahead.

On his expedition, the Longest March, Rune reached the Geographical South Pole the 20th December 2005 at 12.46 GMT. At this time Rune covered 2200 kilometres alone and without resupplies during his 45 days in Antarctica. This is his first expedition to the South Pole.
