The ancient City of Nessebar in Bulgaria is situated on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea - more than 3,000-year-old.
Nessebar's history dates back to ancient times when it was founded as a Thracian settlement. Later, it was colonized by the Greeks, who named it Mesembria. The exact details of the town's early history and its transformation from a Thracian settlement to a Greek colony are subjects of historical interest. The town has also on several occasions found itself on the frontier of a threatened empire. We could observe fortifications at the entrance of Nesebar.
Nessebar was an important Byzantine port and later a part of the Bulgarian Empire during the Middle Ages. The town's medieval churches and fortifications are a testament to this rich history. The specific details of various events and individuals who influenced the town during this period are topics of historical research.
Took a walk around in the town hrough the cobblestone pedestrian streets. They are filled with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops, but most interesting was exploring the historical sites as the Northern harbour, Church of Christ Pantokrator, the wooden windmill on the isthmus, Church of St. John Aliturgetos, Old house and town walls, Church of St. Sophia, Southern bay of the old town.
Nessebar ancient town hosts numerous medieval churches. Many of them are adorned with frescoes and religious icons. For they who I have time and interest can take a deep look into the artists who created these works, their symbolism, and the preservation of these valuable artifacts.
Archaeological excavations in Nessebar have uncovered various artifacts, such as pottery, jewelry, and tools, shedding light on the daily lives of the town's ancient and medieval residents. The ongoing excavations may reveal more historical insights.

Nesebar is sometimes said to be the town with the highest number of churches per capita. Today, a total of forty churches survive, wholly or partly, in the vicinity of the town.
