Interesting exploration in Belarus

2004-02-22
Remains from the Vikings found Archaeologists in Belarus have found items, which probably belonged to a trader during the Viking age.

The exploration was done in a bog by the river Beresina north-east for the Belarus` capital Minsk. Some of the items were a set of weights for weighting silver, 183 undamaged coins, 77 pieces of silver coins of high quality, and an silver bracelet with an sword decorated with a handle designed in silver (reported by the Russian news agency Interfax). Belarus is a small country located in the Eastern Europe.

Neighbouring countries are Russia in the north and east, Latvia and Lithuania in the north-west, Poland in the west and Ukraine in the south. The Vikings were venturesome seafarers from Norway. They sailed around the world between 850 and 1050. Sometimes they behaviour were very brutal, but they were also considered to be good traders. First and foremost the Vikings were great explorers!

The exploration confirms the theory that the Vikings used the river Beresina for their transport to the Black Sea and Constantinople.
