Found a 4300 year old grave in Syria

2004-02-22
American archaeologists excavated in summer a 4300-year-old grave in Syria. They found skeletons decorated with gold and silver from top to toe.
This found was in the middle of one of the oldest city areas in the world. The grave was untouched, and it was found by a coincidence. The archaeologists found remains of 5 adult people and 3 babies. Some of them were decorated with incredible treasures.

They found also a small stone that probable can be from a meteorite. This can be one of the oldest royal graves in the history. If these buried people not are royalties, they have probably taken valuable items with them as a part of a ritual.

The archaeologists will extend their excavation. They hope to find other graves and big palaces from a very old time.

According to Glenn Schwartz, professor of the Johns Hopkins University (Aftenposten, 11th October 2000): here can we learn why, when and how the first city societies developed. This is an important contribution to our understanding of why cities, languages, states and social classes were established.
