Explore the Golden Triangle on an Elephant back

2004-02-08
To do this, you need to take a Mahout traing course! At Anantara Resort & Spa in northern Thailand, you can learn how to control and navigate an Elephant. After several days with instruction and training you have to pass a test before you get your "drivings licence". Then you are ready for great explorations in the dense jungle - on a Elephant back!
At Anantara Resort & Spa you can learn to bathe, feed and take care an elephant. The center offer a package for training so you can ride an elephant on your own.

According to Anantara Resort & Spa`s website, Mahouts can control their elephant with serial psychial commands and 70 verbal commands. The commands need to be delivered in a loud and commanding voice. In northern Thailand these words are a mixture of Central Thai, Northern Thai and Elephant language.

Anantara Resort & Spa is located in the heart of the Mekong Region at the Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, and is only 65 minute flight from Bangkok. The hotel is only one hour from Chiang Rai International airport and two minutes from the Golden Triangle. The hotel is set amidst 400 acres of lush gardens and bamboo forests overlooking Laos and Myanmar. The hotel is built in Royal Thai Lanna Style; with a low rise silhouette of the two story building upon the hilltop, the whole hotel's set on a ridge overlooking the three country meeting point.

Anantara Resort & Spa Golden Triangle is formerly called Baan Boran. From the hotel it`s also possible to get an incredible view of the Ruak River and mighty Mekong River snaking through a landscape of sleepy mountains and impenetrable jungle.

The course is based on the professional trainings programme on the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang. The main idea is that people should have the true feeling of building a strong relationships to the Elephant.

You can choose between two Mahout traing packages: 2 nights and 3 days or 4 nights and 5 days. You will be able to control a elephant so you can penetrate the dense jungle of the Golden Triangle, and perhaps you will get a new friend too. Keep tight on the Elephant back and good luck with the riding!
