Egypt - Lost pyramid of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh found!

2008-06-16
has been rediscovered after being buried for generations. The so-called Headless Pyramid was reported in the early 19th century by a German archaeologist, but its exact location was subsequently lost. Then it disappeared in the sands of Saqqara, a sprawling royal burial complex near current-day Cairo.

According to National Geographic (www.NationalGeographic.com), 5 June 2008, Egyptian archaeologists dig about a year and a half to unveil the pyramid.

Archaeologists believe that the pyramid belonged to Pharaoh Menkauhor, who they assumed ruled for eight years in the mid-2400s B.C. The digging also revealed a new part of a sacred road at the site that is thought to have been used for processions of mummified royal bulls.

The pharaohs in ancient Egypt established a stable central government in the fertile Nile Valley. The greatest testaments to their power were the pyramids and other tombs built to shelter them in the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians believed that when the pharaoh died, he became Osiris, king of the dead. Explore the pyramids on National Geographic: www.NationalGeographic.com
