Swiss researchers have discovered the 100,000-year-old remains of a previously unknown giant camel species in central Syria. The last find of bones confirms the discovery.
The animal, called the "Syrian Camel" by its Swiss and Syrian discoverers, stood between three and four yards (metres) high. It’s about twice the size of camels living today and the height at the shoulder of many African elephants.
Now researchers want to find out why this species of camel died out.
