Exotic Tribes
Be a responsible traveller. Show tribal people respect and meet them on their premises. Visiting people with a different lifestyle and culture could sometimes be a very rewarding adventure, but be aware of that many tribal communities are extremely vulnerable to outside influences. All tribal people need to be protected from tourists in order to preserve their unique lifestyle and cultures. Travellers should understand that some tribes would like to live undisturbed, and that visit would be an intrusion.

Meet the Bushmen in Botswana – View the Video Clip!

2006-10-10
Few are left of the many Bushmen who once where wide spread in southern Africa. Their history goes back to at least 20,000 years. The Bushmen or San, are collectively known as Basarwa in Botswana. Their home is in the vast expanse of the Kalahari desert. They are living in one of the most inhospitable terrains in the world. It’s almost unbelievable that they are able to survive by hunting and gathering roots and tubers in a such barren environment. The Bushmen`s unique lifestyle, culture and sacred rituals are well worth to experience!

There are many different Bushman peoples; they have no collective name for themselves. The terms Bushman, San, and Basarwa (used in Botswana) are used variously. The Bushmen speak a variety of languages, containing 'click' sounds represented in writing by symbols such as ! or /.

The Bushmen’s history is recorded through rock painting, folk tales and songs. They are as mentioned both hunters and gathers. The Bushmen`s favourite prey for meal is various kinds of antelope, but their daily diet has always consisted more of the fruits, nuts and roots.

Explore the Bushmen`s sacred places
One of the most important sacred places related to the Bushmen is called Tsodilo Hills. It`s also known as the Mountains of the Gods. Here it`s possible to admire over 4500 rock paintings. This makes Tsodilo one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world. It is also the first and only World Heritage Site in Botswana. The archaeological record of the area gives a chronological account of human activities and environmental changes over at least 100 000 years. It gives great opportunities for unique adventures for travellers who would like to venture into an unknown world in a breathtaking landscape.
