Malta Fireworks Festival - thunder and lightning in all the rainbow’s colour!

2006-05-10
The dark sky turned suddenly into an inferno of twinkling lights in all colours and shapes. It sounded like thunder and lightning. The spectacular show decorated the dark sky to the fullest. The Maltese Fireworks Festival was held at the Grand Harbour in the capital Valletta on the 29th and 30th of April 2006. This event was a show-case and a prelude to what will occur in the coming months when the villages and towns of Malta and Gozo celebrate the feast of their patron saints.

The first day I observed the fireworks from the Upper Level Barrocks, and on the second day I had the pleasure to admire the show from the balcony of a restaurant near the Upper Level Barrocks. From both places I got a wonderful view of the beautiful city illuminated by the strong shifting lights. On the other side of the sky I could observe the half moon undisturbed by the fireworks rockets fired up in the sky. The fireworks was so strong that people could see it from the Sliema, the largest city on Malta.

In the harbour area I could see a boat floated around with happy people celebrating the big event. I could also hear orchestral and symphonic music from this boat that really made the atmosephere unique. The song beautiful song Time To Say Goodby was also played during the fireworks, but for us there were no doubt: we would like to stay longer, and we are definitely coming back to Malta!

Malta's capital Valetta was built in the 16th century. It`s fortified with baroque style. This wonderful harbour city is notified as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Before the fireworks started, I took my time on the Upper Level Barrocks to enjoy the wonderful panorama view of the island, encompassing forts St Angelo, Ricasoli and St. Elmo, as well as the fortified walls of Valletta and Senglea. The rocky city looked so beautiful in the sunset.

During the two evenings, we experienced several of Malta's best fireworks factories demonstrated their ability in the craft of fireworks displays. This industry have long traditions in Malta.

It was probably the best fireworks I ever have seen. The bangs were fortunately not so loudly, but anyway I am sure they scared away evil spirits, if there is anyone at all in Malta.

People waited patiently a long time for the fireworks. Not so long time after the dark set, the great show started.

The Grand Harbour was once again chosen as the perfect site for firework festival activities. Beside Lascaris Wharf people stood along the Cruise Liner Terminal to watch the spectacular fireworks displayed from the other side of Grand Harbour. The areas were decorated in very similar way to what is normally displayed during a village feast.

Four successful editions of the Malta Fireworks Festival have been arranged in Grand Harbour earlier during a three year period. The organiser is the Ministry for Tourism and Culture in association with the Malta Tourism Authority, who presented the first edition of the Malta International Fireworks Festival. This event commemorated also the 2nd anniversary of Malta's entry into the European Union.

The new event was a showcase of the best pyrotechnical displays made both by local and internationally acclaimed pyrotechnic factories. The factories competed against each other. The audicence could vote for the best firework show by sending SMS to a telephone voting system.

It was like celebrating the New Year. I am sure that also other visitors to the Maltese Islands enjoyed the show too. Many will be back for more fireworks in Malta. I will definitely be one of them!

Coming up more soon about the fireworks in Malta and other interesting things from the islands.
