Fairytale Christmas atmosphere in Oslo, Norway – View the photos!

2005-12-20
Finally the snow has come and the Christmas atmosphere in the Norwegian capital Oslo raise to great heights. What would a Christmas be in Oslo without snow? Few capitals have longer winter than Oslo. It's surrounded by forest, mountains and the fjord. Some of Norway's great winter sites are Voss, Beitostølen, Gålå, Wadahl, Geilo, Hemsedal, Kvitfjell, Hafjell, Lillehammer, Lofoten and Tromsø, but in the outskirts of Oslo city centre there are great opportunities for skiing too. Our photos today show the winter wonderland of Oslo in the Christmas preseason. Famous sites and building as Akershus Fortress, Aker Brygge waterfront, the City Council, the main street Karl Johans Gate, the Nobel Peace Prize Institute and the Royal Palace, look all mysterious in the magic sun light.

Despite there is snow in Oslo now, you can't expect to see Norwegian walking around on ski. Skiing is strongly associated to Norway since "Ski" is a Norwegian word. The oldest ski was found in Norway for circa 5,200 years ago, and it's believed that Norwegians have skied for more than six millennia.

The Norwegian mountains and forests are perfect for cross-country and down hill skiing. In the past there was the only way to move in the winter to use ski.

For they who are interesting this story can take a tour to Holmenkollen in Oslo, where the ski museum is located. Here you can also see ski jumping and go cross country skiing in a exciting area cover by river, small lakes, forest and mountains.

Aker Brygge waterfront is lively the year around. It has modern cafes, bars, and restaurants where people also sit out for drinking and eating in the middle of the winter.

Every year, the Nobel Peace Prize awards "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for brotherhood between nations, for abolition or reduction of standing armies and for arranging and promoting peace processes." The ceremony takes place in the Nobel Institute (or recently in the Oslo City Hall).
