Impressing Norwegian top attempt on Cho Oyu – Mikjel gave everything!

2004-10-12
The Norwegian didn't make it to the top on his attempt Sunday 10 October, but anyway it was a fantastic attempt. He tried to make it on his own.

Photo. Mikjel Thorsrud (22) from Norway didn`t give up easy.

Mikjel`s shape was quite good on his attempt, but the broken ribbon because of cough and pain in the chest became worse.

Mikjel`s biggest obstacle was breaking through over half a metre snow on the slopes by the top plateau. It made it so difficult for him that he was forced to turn.

Then he descended to Camp 2 where he experienced the hardest weather so far on the tour. It was a storm outside, he says, and he admitted that it was not comfortable to walk solo on 7100 metres height with one cubic snow in the front tent.

Mikjel has learned many things during the tour. This is actual more important than the top itself, he says. It will not be the last time for him climbing over 8000 metres.

The Norwegian expedition is called "Shishapangma Ekspedisjonen 2004".

Four French tried to reach the top at the same time as Mikjel, but had to give up due to the snow problems too.

Hard facts: Elevation: 26,906 feet (8,201 metres). Location Khumbu - Himalaya - Nepal/ Tibet.

We in Travel Explorations are glad that everything went fine, and that Mikjel didn't take any unnecessary risks to reach the summit. He will get chances to conquer other summits later.
