Mitch Seavey became the winner of “The Last Great Race on Earth"

2004-03-18
Mitch Seavey won back the Iditarod for the USA on Wednesday, completing the world's toughest dog sled race in nine days, 12 hours, 20 minutes and 22 seconds. He arrived on 16 March (2004) at 10:20:22 p.m. with 8 dogs.

Second became the three-time winner Jeff King (USA). The Norwegian Kjetil Backen finished third (reported by the Official Site of the Last Great Race - www.iditarod.com).

As it stands in the rules for the competition: "the object of the race is to determine which musher and dogs can cover the race in the shortest time under their own power and without aid of others. That is determined by the nose of the first dog to cross the finish line" (referred from the website www.iditarod.com).

The winner, Mitch Seavey, 44, was born in Minnesota. His family moved to Alaska in 1963 when his dad took a teaching job here. He began mushing as a child in 1964.

Norwegian Robert Soerlie won the Iditarod in 2003 and hopes to compete again next year (according to the Norwegian national newspaper Aftenposten, 17 March 2004 on its website www.aftenposten.no).

We in Travel Explorations are sure that the Norwegian Vikings look forward to the next race, and for the big revenge.

Stein Morten Lund, 18 March 2004
