The world’s most hateful football matches - Part 1 of 2

2003-12-30
An incredible fascinating atmosphere, but also frightening
- Great enthusiasm
- Strong expressions of love and hate
- Hard-drinking
- Shouting and singing
- Fighting and violence
- Big police forces and arresting
- And even killing

Football (soccer) supporters are not like other sport fans. For them football means everything in life. Victory and enjoyment are what they are struggling for, but sometimes hates lights from their eyes. This makes the battles even harder outside the stadiums than on the football grounds.

Hate occurs especially when their team plays against the rival. Through wild shouting they express their most deep feelings about the main enemy. Soccer is their passion, but it is a lot more than that. It is about religion, politics and regional prestige. This mix of elements here can be the real dynamite! Sometimes it explodes…..

It is not difficult to understand that football hooliganism related to outrages violence. It is spread around the world and occurs in most societies, more or less. Hate against a certain team joins people. They feel that they have something strong in common. Sometimes it turns in to mass suggestion, which make them totally uncontrolled in their behaviour. Some matches within a country are sometimes even more hateful than matches between countries.

Here are probably the most disreputable hate matches:

Barcelona - Real Madrid (Spain)
OLÈ, OLÈ, OLÈ! FORZA BARCA, FORCA REAL MADRID. In someway it probably looks like a bullfight, but it is not. It is really Spanish football on their best, and also here they shout OLÈ, OLÈ, OLÈ, and sometimes puta, puta, when they get real furious, as they do most of the time. The capacity is over 100.000 spectators, and they know their football, but also their politic, religion and history.

Barcelona has been the centre, struggling for independence for the Catalonia region for many years. That is because these matches also are a fight against the central politicians in the capital Madrid. The wild crowd can frighten players almost to death. You can see what happened to big stars like the Danish Michael Laudrup and the Portuguese Luis Figo.

When they entered Nou Camp (Barcelona) after they jumped over from Barcelona to the main enemy Real Madrid, the audience greetings were not the best. Many players get totally paralysed, and make them not able to kick a ball during the whole match. The slogan to Barcelona Football club is: Barca mas de un club. Be sure the supporters take this literally.

River Plate - Boca Junior (Argentina)
You can here them from a long distance. OLÈ, OLÈ, OLÈ! Puta, puta…. ! On the hate matches between two of the capital Bueno Aires` many top teams, River Plate from the rich area and Diego Maradona`s former club Boca Juniors from the working class area, the surroundings looks like a state of emergency. When these rivals are playing against each other, you have to go through many checkpoints. So it will take a time before you can enter the overwhelming stadium.

It`s not the safest place on earth when River Plate and Bocca Juniors play against each other, but incredible fascinating.

During years many fans have died due to clashes between rivalling groups. Police and military forces acts sometimes very brutal in order control the wild crowd. Fighting between supporters from the same team in South America happens also sometimes. Intense discussions about how the team should play, referees and other things, has caused killing. Some people are so fanatic about it that they are willing to die for it.
