Canada - big, different, varied and colourful!

2003-12-26
Exploring Canada the right way leads to the most amazing adventures. Here are some of my great experiences in 1997...................

- Whale watching on boat from Digby Neck - Visiting native Indians outside Quebec (Huron) - where was "The last of the Mohicans"? - Searching for ghosts in Halifax (ghost busters) - Visit places and hear tales about pirates and buried treasures in Scotia Novia Sea-kayaking on channels and lakes - Rocking the night away in Quebec and Montreal without talking a single word French Cruising down the St. Lawrence river Watching remains from the Titanic shipwreck - Exploring the old fishing village Peggy`s Cove and the lighthouse - Marching together with the Acadians - Visiting old Jesuit Mission stations - Observing from the world highest tower, Toronto Tower Admiring the Niagara waterfalls - Going crazy at the annual carnival in Toronto Canada has a lot to offer adventure travellers: history, nature and people

The country is the second biggest country in the world, nearly as big as Europe. Only the Russian Federation is larger. But few people live in the country compared with its enormous land area. Canadian people are not like the people from USA, and people in the France province Quebec are not like their "cousins" in French.

Here are some photos from my journey in Canada:

Photo: Ghostbusting. In the night I walk around in a cemetery (graveyard) in Halifax looking for something unnatural. It is more between heaven and earth than we can imagine. What I saw and heard I cannot explain, but it was scary to be there.

Photo: Ghost? See the right window!

Look at the profile of a dead man on the window at St. Paul's church in Halifax. Even though the glass has been replaced many times, the profile still appears on the window. In 1917 a ship loaded with dynamite exploded in Halifax's harbour. At the time it was the world's biggest explosion.

A huge piece of glass flew through the air and chopped a man's head off. The head was thrown into the air and smashed the window. Ever since the profile of the head appears in the window.

Photo: Ghost? See this profile! Head of an man! Strange, isn`t?

Photo: Whales are incredible creatures on earth.

Photo: Stein Morten enjoys watching Niagara Falls from the Canadian side.

Photo: Beautiful Niagara Falls. I didn't float down the falls in a wooden barrel, but anyway I had an exciting time there.

Canada has its own national profile and cultural identity even though is so cosmopolitan. The country was one of the first countries in the world that declared "multicultural" as a constituted right. Its politics is based on a totally different value fundament and attitude than their neighbour US. You find seldom or never poor people, racial conflicts and such enormous criminality as it is on the other side of the border. You can walk out at night almost everywhere and have a good time.

In Canada people from different national origin live together in harmony and enjoy their company. Canada's colourful cultural mix is considered to be a mosaic more than a melting pot as it is in the USA. In the US you have all the mainstreamers. People all over are the same, but in Canada your have more freedom to adopt you own lifestyle based on cultural background and interests. At the same time the society in Canada is more relaxed and not so money focused as it is in other places.

In this country you can have a really good life (according to rankings; Canada is the best place to live in the world). Canadians have a high degree of national pride. They will feel insulted if you treat them as they where people from the US. Canada is definitely independent, and as I said; it's not like the US.

Canada is different! With all my respect: Canadian history, nature and people. I really enjoyed Canada and I am glad that the country has its own way to do things. Don't be afraid to go there! You will like it too.

Stein Morten Lund, 21 July 2000

Additional information Oak Island - the world's greatest mystery - still unsolved. Oak Island, also called the "Money Pit" and "Treasure Island", even though nothing has been found so far. It is still one of the world's greatest mysteries located in Canada. There you will find incredible shafts, tunnels and chambers under the ground. Someone says it is so incredible constructed that no humans have been able to make it, especially not for 200 years ago.
