Budapest Castle District, Hungary: monuments, buildings, museums, and a stunning view

Buda Castle is also home to the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the National Library. Other attractions include the Lion Courtyard; the Matthias Well, a bronze statue of King Matthias; and the statue of the Turul Bird, the mythological bird of the Magyars. Besides the monuments, we got a breathtaking panorama of the Danube with the Chain Bridge and the Pest side of the city on the opposite side of the river. Everything at one place!

Budapest Castle District is a world heritage site. One of the greatest attractions is the Matthias Church (Hungarian: Mátyás-templom): It`s a Roman Catholic church located in in front of the Fisherman's Bastion at the heart of Buda's Castle District. According to church tradition, it was originally built in Romanesque style in 1015, although no archaeological remains exist. The current building was constructed in the florid late Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century and was extensively restored in the late 19th century. It was the second largest church of medieval Buda and the seventh largest church of medieval Hungarian Kingdom.

The first royal residence on Castle Hill has a long and dramatic history. It was built in the 13th century, after the Mongolian invasion. It was extended in the 14th century, becoming probably the largest Gothic palace of the late Middle Ages.
