11 organised walking routes across Europe

2004-03-27
Through the walking routes worked out by the European Ramblers Association, you have the opportunity to experience an incredible walk of life time. On the routes you can ascend so high up that you can see the tallest mountain in Western Europe, Mt. Blanc, on a clear day. But since you are in the area, and you have sufficient time, it's also possible to take an extra trip to the top.

Some of the routes are:

  • North Cape to Sicily
  • Galway to Nice
  • Istanbul to Cape St Vincent
  • Den Haag to Russia

Information about the routes is given by the ERA Footpaths Commission (the European Ramblers Association - see its website for more detailed information www.era-ewv-ferp.org).

The ERA (European Ramblers Association) was founded in Germany in 1969 to act as an international umbrella organisation for all the major national walking organisations throughout Europe. Today 50 national organisations are associated to ERA. Its main aims are: Encourage people to further walking and climbing activities whilst at the same time protecting the environment, create and maintain a network of trans-frontier footpaths (the E-paths), which act as a symbol of unity between the nations of Europe, and protect and develop Europe's cultural heritage.

In 2005 is it 100 years ago since Norway and Sweden "divorced" - dissoluted their union. The tourist authorities in Norway and Sweden cooperation now with a project called "Grensesommen" ("Grensesømmen"). The idea of the project is to organise a whole route from the border from south to north (according to Rana Blad - www.ranablad.no . Here you can find your own paradise in two of Scandinavians beautiful nature, and give you an walking experience of lifetime.

As ERA says it: few people have the time or the stamina to tackle a whole route in one go. But don't worry. There are routes and distances for everyone. And with good spirits and guts you can walk a long distance.

As the famous Liverpool-song (used on football matches in Liverpool) goes on: WITH HOPE IN YOUR HEARTS, YOU NEVER WALK ALONE! Take your best friends with you and enjoy the grandeur of the nature in Europe.

Stein Morten Lund, 27 March 2004
