Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Munich - the place for beer, music and socialising

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl,Munich,Germany

This fantastic beer hall is always fullpacked. You can immediately feel the energy and joy here. Just take a step inside and you will be lifted up to great hights. Hofbräuhaus am Platzl has also a dark secret from past: Hitler used to make speeches here to Nazi supporters.

The Oompah music in the beer hall Hofbräuhaus am Platzl in Munich liftet up the guests mood. From the first step I took inside, I could immediately feel the strong vibrations. This place is one of Munich's most outstanding tourist attraction and historical monument. It`s famous for historical events, lively atmosphere and live traditional Bavarian music. Definitely a come here when you visit Munich.

Hofbräuhaus is a traditional bierkeller with long wooden benches and big mugs of beer. Beer was served in standard 1 liter mugs called Maß by staff wear tracht with men in lederhosen and women in dirndl. This is the perfect Bavarian experience along with the music and all of the staff and a lot of the locals in traditional dress. This is a big place. Even though it`s always full so getting a table can take a while. Be patient. You will get your chance. People come and go, so just wait a while, and you will find your seat. There is also a good selection of food here included some traditional dishes.

Hofbräuhaus is a perfect place for beer partygoers. The music keeps everyone in a good spirit. Be ready for sing along on the famous Hofbräuhaus song (Hofbräuhaus-Lied), composed in 1935 by Wilhelm 'Wiga' Gabriel, goes: "In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus, oans, zwoa, g'suffa!" ("There's a Hofbräuhaus in Munich—one, two, down the hatch!" in the local dialect). When the orchestra started to play this song, some guests stood up on the benches, waved their hands and started to sing.

For sing along at the chorus:
In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .
Da läuft so manches Fäßchen aus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .
Da hat so manche braver Mann:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .

It was good to sit down here sipping my beer and talking to nice people. It has obvious become more cosmopolitan and liberal than it was in the past, and it is a great place to visit. When you enter the beer hall, you’d never suspect it’s dark past. In 1919, the Munich Communist government set up headquarters in the beer hall, and in February 1920 Adolf Hitler and the National Socialists held their first meeting in the Festsaal, the Festival Room, on the third floor.

In February 1920, Hitler and the National Socialists held their very first meeting at Hofbrauhaus in Munich. During this gathering, Hitler presented the Nazi Party ‘Twenty Five Point Program’ (a political manifesto outlining the party’s philosophy and mission) in the Festival Room. Hofbrauhaus is also where Hitler publicly denounced the Jews and gave his infamous “Why We Are Antisemites” speech. In fact, Hofbrauhaus played a such central role in Hilter’s rise to power that they would celebrate the founding of the Nazi party here every year on it’s anniversary.

Today Hofbrauhaus is the largest and most crowded beer hall in Munich. It`s a cosmopolitan place full of people from many different countries and cultures. Here you can meet people free of national prejudices and share common interests in drinking beer, listen to Oompah music and discuss whatever you like. While the majority of customers are tourists, we did see some locals as well. In Bavaria “regular’s tables” are a tradition and Hofbrauhaus has more than 100 active groups of regulars, with their oldest regular’s table being held for 70 years. past. One nice old man who I met here has a reserved table and had been here every Friday during 40 year.

During my long weekend, I visited this place several times, and met nice people from England, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA and Canada. We were happily sipping our large beers under ceiling swastikas that have been carefully painted and disguised as Bavarian flags. And some of us were singing along too!

The restaurant comprises most of the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, which also includes a ballroom and outdoor Wirtsgarten. Its menu features such traditional favorites of Bavarian cuisine as Brezn (soft pretzel), Obatzda (cheese dip), Hax'n, and sausages such as Bratwurst and Weisswurst. Brews include Helles and Dunkles served in a Maß, Weißbier, and wine.

Hofbräuhaus-Lied (Wiga Gabriel, 1939):
In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .
Da läuft so manches Fäßchen aus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .
Da hat so manche braver Mann:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa . . .
Gezeigt was er so vertragen kann
Schon früh am Morgen fing er an
Und spät am Abend kam er heraus
So schön ist's im Hofbräuhaus.

1. Da, wo die grüne Isar fließt,
Wo man mit "Grüß Gott" dich grüßt,
Liegt meine schöne Münch'ner Stadt,
Die ihresgleichen nicht hat.
Wasser ist billig, rein und gut,
Nur verdünnt es unser Blut,
Schöner sind Tropfen gold'nen Wein's,
Aber am schönsten ist eins:
In München steht ein . . . . .

3. Wenn auch so manche schöne Stadt
Sehenswürdigkeiten hat,
Eins gibt es nirgendwo wie hier:
Das ist das Münchener Bier.
Wer dieses kleine Lied erdacht
Hat so manche lange Nacht
Über dem Münchener Bier studiert
Und hat es gründlich probiert.
In München steht ein . . . . .
